Government Wenlock Hospital to get 50-bed Critical Care Unit: Dinesh Gundu Rao
Dinesh Gundu RaoMangaluru: In a significant move to boost the healthcare system, the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dinesh Gundu Rao has announced the establishment of a new critical care unit at Government Wenlock District Hospital.
The announcement was made on August 15, 2024, during the inauguration of the Medical and Surgical Super Speciality department. The critical care unit will be developed at a cost of Rs17 Crore with 50 beds.
Wenlock Hospital has all the facilities that private hospitals have. The new surgical block has a modular operating room and all required modern equipment. These upgraded facilities can be compared with modern private hospitals. With the help of KMC, the government will ensure that all super speciality services are available at the hospital. Neuro, cardiothoracic, and other surgery facilities are available at the new block. Furthermore, a new cath lab will start functioning within two months said the Minister. These facilities will significantly enhance the hospital’s service offerings.

Assembly Speaker U T Khader emphasized that the external look of the building is not enough. He talked about the importance of quality care and suggested incorporating specialized units like Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology and Research, Nimhans, and Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology within the hospital in Bengaluru.
According to the News Karnataka, MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath suggested developing an app to efficiently manage the hospital's advanced equipment. The event also honoured Dr Rajeshwaridevi, former district surgeon and superintendent, for her significant contributions.
Dr. Mohanchandra Suvarna, Prof. Diwakar Rao, and Prof. Suresh Pai were also felicitated in the presence of Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur and MLA Ashok Kumar Rai. Each of them had dedicated over 30 years of service to the hospital.
DK MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, in a similar proposal, urged the state government to sanction an All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) unit in Mangaluru. He further stated that Wenlock Hospital should be recognized as a regional hospital and steps should be taken to address the staff shortage issue. He emphasized the need to start a cancer treatment unit at the hospital as soon as possible.
This development marks a major advancement in the city's efforts to enhance emergency medical services and provide top-notch care to patients in critical conditions. The new unit aims to address gaps in healthcare services and reduce patient load on existing institutions.
