Gurgaon orders dedicated Flu OPDs to combat seasonal illness surge

Gurgaon: The Gurgaon health department has directed all government and private hospitals to set up dedicated flu outpatient departments (OPDs) and flu corners to manage seasonal respiratory illnesses and help prevent a potential surge in COVID-like infections. These specialised units will serve patients presenting with symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
The directive aims to strengthen the early detection and timely treatment of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI), which often present similarly to COVID-19.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that India has witnessed a slight uptick in COVID-19 cases over the past few days, with the Union Health Ministry updating its official dashboard to reflect 257 active cases across the country. The uptick comes amid a broader regional resurgence in parts of Asia, including Hong Kong and Singapore.

Hospitals have also been directed to review their internal readiness, including ensuring adequate infrastructure, trained personnel, and proper safety protocols. Medical staff, particularly those newly recruited, are being trained to handle COVID-19 patients in case of an escalation.
Despite only five active COVID-19 cases currently reported in the district—all of whom are in home isolation with mild symptoms—health officials are urging continued caution.

Speaking to TOI, Dr Alka Singh, Chief Medical Officer, Gurgaon, said, "While the numbers remain low, the virus hasn't disappeared. All hospitals and laboratories have been instructed to remain alert and adhere to government-approved testing rates."
She added that the district is well-prepared to handle any potential surge in cases and urged residents to take basic precautions, such as wearing masks in crowded areas and maintaining proper hygiene.
Residents—especially the elderly residents and individuals with comorbidities are being advised to seek medical attention if they develop flu-like symptoms. Basic preventive measures such as mask-wearing in crowded areas, hand hygiene, and avoiding unnecessary exposure remain crucial.
According to TOI, "The department has asked us to train newly inducted staff for managing Covid patients, should the need arise," said Jai Prakash, district surveillance officer.
