Guwahati: 2 women booked for abducting newborns from GMCH

Guwahati: In an attempt to abduct newborn babies at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), two women have been caught red-handed by the hospital authority and were later handed over to the police.

The hospital authorities tracked the two women when they entered the hospital to abduct the newborn babies upon getting information from a patient in the maternity ward who was eager to sell her baby in the absence of her husband.

After nabbing the duo, the hospital Superintendent identified as Abhijit Sharma informed the police and they were sentenced to three-day police custody as per the direction given by the local court on Thursday.

The cops suspect that the duo could be in connection with a child liftering racket and they are in the process of investigating the matter in more depth.

The incident took place on Tuesday when the two child lifters entered the hospital planning to steal the babies but the Home guards in civil dress and private security detected suspicious movement of the duo and they were handed over to the police. The duo were booked on Wednesday and they were presented at the court on Thursday to which the incident came to light.

While contacting the Superintendent, he revealed more information about the incident saying, "The security personnel heard the women discussing how they bought a baby for Rs 5,000. All suspicious movements near the baby ward are now being strictly monitored. Yesterday, we acted on information from an attendant who overheard the duo planning to lift a baby."

To prevent the incident in future, Sharma has instructed the security personnel to maintain a strict surveillance near the maternity ward and stay alert.

DCP, Guwahati East Police District, Sudhakar Singh told TOI, "The arrests were made based on an FIR by the GMCH superintendent. The two women were said to be in touch with women in the maternity ward who were poor and had given birth recently. They were tempted to sell their babies. The apprehended women were in touch with a particular woman who had given birth but whose husband was not present. The police have recorded her statement." however, the investigation is underway to nab a bigger racket involved with the case.
