Hamirpur Medical College to get Cancer Care Centre with 11 specialty departments: CM Sukhu
Hamirpur: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu announced that the state government has decided to establish a state-of-the-art cancer care center at Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur.
This cancer care center will house 11 new specialty departments for the convenience of cancer patients viz Departments of Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Pain Palliative Care, Nuclear Medicine, Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, Onco Pathology, Paediatric Oncology, Radiology Imaging, Gynaecological Oncology, Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplantation and Radiation Oncology will be established in the Cancer Care Centre and these departments will provide special facilities to cancer patients, news agency UNI reported.
Sukhu belongs to Hamirpur district and is the man behind the start of Dr Radha Krishnan Medical College at Hamirpur. He said in a statement on Friday that the state's health system is being strengthened.
The establishment of this new centre will develop a robust treatment system in the state. Given the increasing incidence of cancer in the state, there is an urgent need for systematic screening, prevention, monitoring, recording, and timely detection.
Sukhu stated that the development and coordination of primary health facilities to higher-level cancer care institutions is essential. Focusing on prevention, early detection, and comprehensive patient support, the state government proposed the establishment of the State Cancer Center at Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur, and the Medical Education Department has initiated necessary steps in this direction.
The CM said that with a total capacity of 264 beds, the center will be dedicated exclusively to cancer patients. It will include a clinical laboratory, an outpatient department (OPD), a pharmacy, an emergency ward, a nuclear medicine OPD, and registration services. To ensure the effective operation of the cancer institute, the government will provide adequate and qualified medical, paramedical, and support staff, reports UNI.
The Chief Minister said that since assuming office, the Congress government has taken several important steps to revamp the state's healthcare system.
He said that, modelled after AIIMS Delhi, outdated machinery and equipment are being replaced in state health institutions with world-class machinery and facilities.
Expressing concern over the state's highest cancer rate after the northeastern states of the country, he said that the establishment of a high-level cancer hospital will ensure accessible and quality cancer care for the people of the state.
