Himachal Pradesh approves Common cadre for faculty appointments at Medical Colleges

Shimla: In a move aimed at enhancing the quality of medical education and healthcare services, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced on Sunday that the state government will establish a common cadre for faculty appointments in all government medical colleges and super-speciality institutions.

In an official statement, Sukhu explained that currently, faculty appointments follow a college-specific cadre system, which results in administrative redundancies, inconsistencies in service conditions, and a severe shortage of faculty, particularly in newly established medical colleges.

He said, “To address these challenges, the common cadre system will create a unified structure for faculty recruitment, career progression, and inter-institutional transfers, ensuring a fair and transparent framework for faculty management”, reports PTI.

Under the proposed common cadre system, recruitment processes, training programs, and career advancement opportunities will be standardized across all government medical colleges, while also harmonizing service conditions across all government medical institutions.

The Chief Minister further emphasized that this will enable better faculty utilization, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently to areas where they are needed most.

According to the PTI, the Chief Minister said, “The reform also aims to strengthen medical education by eliminating disparities in career growth and fostering a merit-based system for faculty promotions. Additionally, it will enhance the quality of healthcare services, as better-managed institutions will directly contribute to improved patient care.”

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that with an aim to deliver home-based palliative care to cancer patients and other terminally ill individuals unable to visit hospitals Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu flagged off a vehicle carrying a dedicated team of medical professionals. This team includes a doctor trained in palliative care, a sociologist, and a nurse who would provide compassionate care as part of the Pain and Palliative Cell established under the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology at IGMC Shimla.
