Junior Doctors, Engineers Clash at IGIMS Patna; Three Injured, Tension Inside Hospital
Patna: In a shocking incident, junior doctors and engineering department employees allegedly clashed at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, on Thursday, leaving three staff members injured and triggering panic within the hospital premises.
According to the news reports, the injured employees sustained head injuries and were admitted to the emergency ward. The altercation reportedly broke out in the electrical department located on the first floor of the dental block. The situation led to chaos inside the hospital for nearly half an hour, with patients, attendants, and staff reportedly rushing for safety.
The incident is said to have escalated from a dispute that began on Wednesday evening when an electrical engineer had reportedly visited the radiology department for air conditioner repair work, and an altercation occurred with junior resident doctors. Sources alleged that the engineer was assaulted by a group of 10–20 doctors during the confrontation.
Following the incident, a complaint was submitted to the institute administration. However, the injured employees alleged that no immediate action was taken.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported another alleged case at IGIMS where a final-year MBBS student was allegedly assaulted by hospital staff and security guards after a dispute over delayed treatment.
On Thursday, the engineer, along with his father and the lift engineer, reportedly returned to follow up on the complaint. After failing to meet the director, they were allegedly attacked near the electrical department by a group of junior resident doctors who were already aware of the earlier complaint, according to the allegations.
The situation prompted swift police intervention. Speaking to TOI, Saket Kumar, SDPO-II of Secretariat, said, “In IGIMS, a scuffle took place inside the premises between some doctors and maintenance engineers over a maintenance-related issue. It appears there was some confusion between both sides. From the initial understanding, it does not seem like a very big issue.”
Police from Shastri Nagar Police Station reached the spot shortly after the incident and began examining CCTV footage from the hospital to ascertain the sequence of events. Authorities have also deployed additional police personnel at IGIMS in three shifts to maintain law and order on campus.
