IGMC principal Dr Sita Thakur's tenure extended till February 2027

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has granted a one-year extension in service to Dr Sita Thakur, Principal of Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla. The extension will be effective from March 1, 2026, to February 28, 2027.
According to a notification issued by the Department of Medical Education and Research recently Governor has approved the extension in the public interest, news agency UNI reported.
The government stated that the decision was made in view of the ongoing academic and developmental initiatives at IGMC and the need for continuity in experienced leadership to ensure smooth functioning and institutional stability.

Officials noted that Dr Thakur’s services have been found satisfactory, and her continued leadership would help maintain the momentum of various institutional reforms and development works underway at the state’s premier medical college.
The notification further stated that the extension would be regulated in accordance with the Finance Department instructions issued from time to time. Dr Sita Thakur would retire from government service on February 28, 2027, upon completion of the extension period, reports UNI.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated a State-of-the-Art 3 Tesla MRI machine installed at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, at a cost of approximately Rs 23 crore. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister stated that the outdated MRI machine, which had been in operation at IGMC for nearly 20 years, has now been replaced with this advanced high-end equipment. He noted that similar 3 Tesla MRI technology is being used at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He emphasized that the State Government was committed to ushering in systemic transformation and is equipping medical institutions with cutting-edge technology to strengthen healthcare services.
