Inquiry ordered after teen allegedly gets false positive pregnancy test at Thane Hospital

Mumbai: Medical negligence has been alleged at a government hospital in Maharashtra’s Thane district after a 17-year-old girl was reportedly subjected to pregnancy tests without her family’s consent, with the tests allegedly showing a false-positive result.

The matter was raised during a Standing Committee meeting, following which the Municipal Commissioner ordered an inquiry into the incident.

As per the news reports, the incident took place at Shastri Nagar Hospital in the Kalyan-Dombivali area, where the teenager had been admitted for treatment related to menstrual problems. However, she was allegedly subjected to a pregnancy test thrice, following which the doctors informed her family that she had tested positive.

Seeking a second opinion, the family reportedly took the teenager to a private hospital, where another pregnancy test returned a negative result. The discrepancy raised questions about the accuracy of the tests conducted at the government facility and the procedures followed by its medical staff.

The girl was subsequently treated for her menstrual-related health problem at the private hospital. After doctors prescribed medication, she was discharged.

The incident raised questions over the conduct and working procedures of doctors at the Shastri Nagar Hospital. There have been demands for strict action, including registration of a case against those found responsible, reports NDTV.

Officials said the inquiry will examine the circumstances under which the pregnancy tests were conducted, the reported results and the procedures followed by the hospital staff.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a committee investigating the alleged surgery on the wrong leg of a four-year-old boy at Shaheed Hasan Khan Mewati (SHKM) Government Medical College and Hospital has submitted its report, following which hospital authorities issued warnings to the doctors and ultrasound staff involved for negligence, officials said.
