Mumbai: In a strategic move to enhance productivity and support its workforce, Mumbai’s prestigious JJ Hospital is set to develop a new residential complex. This initiative aims to address longstanding issues related to housing and improve overall staff efficiency and well-being.

With an investment of Rs 728 crore, the Grant Medical College and Sir JJ Group of Hospitals have announced plans to build a state-of-the-art residential complex on their campus. This facility will provide accommodation for 1,500 families of hospital staff. As the institution celebrates its 180th anniversary this year, hospital dean Dr Pallavi Saple discusses with Rupsa Chakraborty the various initiatives aimed at enhancing staff facilities and the measures being implemented to further improve healthcare services for patients.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the state-run JJ Hospital is planning to undertake a major redevelopment project on its campus. The plan, estimated at ₹728 crores, aims to replace the aging residential quarters with luxury flats, marking a major shift in the hospital's infrastructure and amenities.

JJ Hospital is undertaking a significant infrastructure revamp, particularly in response to the strains highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The long overdue redevelopment includes modernizing the decades-old facility to support four new specialized courses: MD in Geriatrics, MD in Immunohematology, DM in Interventional Cardiology, and MD in Emergency Medicine. The plan features the construction of a new super-speciality centre and substantial upgrades to the existing building. This includes enhancing ICUs and operation theatres to improve patient care and minimize infection risks. Additionally, every bed will be equipped with oxygen, and some wards will be converted into high-dependency units to provide advanced care for patients requiring CPAP.

The addition of new specializations has significantly impacted both the hospital's capacity and the overall medical education offered at JJ Hospital. The expansion of our MD and MS programs, from 127 annual admissions in 2017 to 309 now, highlights the increased demand and scope of our training. New courses in Geriatrics, Immunohematology, Interventional Cardiology, and Emergency Medicine address contemporary healthcare needs and prepare students for emerging medical fields.

To accommodate this growth, the hospital is constructing a super-speciality building that will increase our bed capacity by 1,200, elevating it from 1,352. This development is designed to enhance the learning environment for students, support their clinical training, and improve patient care overall.

As part of the modernization efforts, JJ Hospital is making significant strides in updating its medical equipment and technology. The introduction of a robotic surgery system in the Surgery and Orthopedics departments is a key development. This advanced technology will not only enhance precision in surgical procedures but also provide crucial training opportunities in advanced surgical techniques. Additionally, the hospital will also offer hyperbaric oxygen treatment, which is particularly beneficial for patients undergoing neurosurgery and those suffering from gangrene.

The new cutting-edge virtual anatomy dissection table introduced at the hospital will significantly advance medical study. As one of the first government-run hospitals in Maharashtra to acquire this technology, the hospital now offers a highly detailed 3D model of the human body. This system allows users to explore anatomical structures from any angle and practice repeatedly, overcoming the limitations of traditional cadaveric dissection.

This system allows users to explore anatomical structures from any angle and practice repeatedly without the limitations associated with traditional cadaveric dissection. The interactive interface, which includes touchscreens and controls, enables users to layer, slice, and examine various body systems with exceptional detail. This hands-on, customizable learning experience enhances educational precision and accessibility, setting a new standard for medical training and study.

According to The Indian Express, as JJ Hospital marks its 180th anniversary, it is embarking on a significant cultural and educational initiative by establishing a Museum of Medical Education within its historic college building. This museum aims to celebrate the rich legacy of JJ Hospital and offer the public a unique glimpse into India's medical history.

A highlight of the museum will be the Bible of Anatomy, an important historical text illustrated by Grant Medical College’s first professor. This rare book reflects the early days of medical education in India and provides insights into anatomical knowledge from a bygone era. The museum will also feature 100-year-old moulages, historic images, and busts. It will be open to the public, offering a unique perspective on India's medical heritage.

The establishment of the museum is seen as a meaningful way to honour the hospital’s past while contributing to public knowledge and appreciation of medical history. This initiative is a wonderful effort to preserve and highlight the invaluable history of JJ Hospital.
