Kannur private hospital under scanner after patient allegedly suffers partial disability

Kannur: A case of alleged medical negligence has been registered against a private hospital in Kannur after a 40-year-old patient reportedly suffered severe injuries that left him partially disabled and unable to move both arms.

The case was filed by Kannur Town Police following a complaint lodged by a timber loading worker, a resident of Arivalappoyil near Udayagiri. He alleged that he lost movement in both hands after undergoing treatment at the hospital.

According to the complaint, the patient had visited the private hospital on March 1 after developing fever-related symptoms. His family alleged that he was later shifted to the intensive care unit, where hospital authorities reportedly informed the accompanying relative that he had become violent and required physical restraint during treatment. Consent was allegedly obtained from the family before proceeding with the restraint.

The family further alleged that the patient remained unconscious for several days while undergoing treatment. He was later shifted to another hospital in Mangaluru in an ICU-equipped ambulance, with both his hands and legs tied to the stretcher during the journey.

The family alleged that it was only after reaching the hospital in Mangaluru that they discovered severe wounds under both armpits, which they believe were caused by the restraints used during treatment.

The family has raised serious allegations regarding the treatment provided at the hospital and has submitted complaints to the Chief Minister and the Human Rights Commission seeking intervention. The patient is currently undergoing Ayurvedic treatment, reports the Hindu.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway to examine the allegations of negligence and possible lapses in patient care at the hospital.

Medial Dialogues had previously reported that in an unfortunate incident, a 27-year-old woman died during childbirth at Kottayam Medical College Hospital (MCH), following which her family filed a formal complaint alleging medical negligence.
