Kauvery Hospital introduces 5G ambulances to strengthen emergency care in Chennai
Chennai: Emergency care in Chennai is set to move beyond hospital premises, with Kauvery Hospital introducing a fleet of 5G-enabled ambulances that allow specialists to remotely monitor patients during transportation.
The system is designed to provide doctors with real-time vital data and enable paramedics to receive clinical guidance during transit. The service was launched by Dr. A. Amalraj IPS, Additional Director General of Police, Greater Chennai Police, in the presence of Dr. Manivannan Selvaraj, Founder and Managing Director of Kauvery Group of Hospitals, and comprises more than 30 ambulances deployed across key locations in Chennai, reports The Hindu.
The ambulances operate from areas including Poonamallee High Road, Porur, Kilambakkam- Vandalur, Outer Ring Road, KarapakkamâOMR, Tondiarpet, Perambur, Adyar, Guindy, Medavakkam and Kelambakkam.
The Deployment locations have been identified based on factors such as population density, traffic conditions, public gathering points and accident-prone areas, with the objective of reducing response and travel times.

Each ambulance is equipped as an advanced cardiac life support unit with ventilators, defibrillators, infusion and syringe pumps, suction equipment and multiparameter monitors. Its Continuous Patient Monitoring System (CPMS) uses an IoT-based setup to transmit parameters such as oxygen saturation, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and pulse rate to the hospital in real time, reports Deccan News.
Through 5G connectivity, clinicians can receive patient information with low latency and begin preliminary assessment before the ambulance arrives. The system also supports emergency neonatal, paediatric, neurological and cardiac care.
A dedicated CPMS control room uses GPS-enabled Computer-Aided Dispatch to identify and send the nearest available ambulance after receiving an emergency call. The hospital said the service currently handles an average of around 1,100 emergencies each month across Chennai.
Dr. Manivannan Selvaraj said connecting hospital-based clinical teams with paramedics from the beginning of an emergency can support timely intervention. Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Kauvery Group of Hospitals, noted that real-time clinical oversight can assist paramedics in making better decisions while stabilising patients during transport.
The service can also be accessed through the SOS feature on the Kauvery Kare App, which connects users with the hospital control room and enables 24/7 video consultation with a doctor until emergency assistance arrives.
