KEM Hospital Mumbai to expand bed capacity to 2,500 by adding 300 Beds
Mumbai: KEM Hospital in Mumbai is poised to enhance its bed capacity significantly by the end of September, responding to the increasing demand for healthcare services in the city. The plan involves adding 300 beds, which will elevate its total capacity to 2,500.
This expansion is a crucial step in addressing the rising healthcare needs of the community, especially following the operational challenges encountered over the past year.
Currently operating with 2,250 scheduled beds, KEM Hospital has experienced a remarkable influx of patients, admitting 64,520 individuals in 2023 alone—averaging 177 admissions per day. The hospital’s outpatient department recorded an impressive 1,792,183 visits, highlighting the critical role it plays in the community.

As per a media report in The Indian Express, Dr Sangita Rawat, the dean of KEM Hospital, emphasized, “The expansion of KEM Hospital is not just a response to current pressures but a proactive measure to strengthen its role as a vital healthcare provider in Mumbai.”
The decision to expand the hospital's bed capacity comes at a crucial moment, particularly following significant challenges faced in recent times. Due to severe disrepair, four medicine and two general surgery wards had to be closed, forcing the hospital to treat patients in makeshift wards at the nearby Shivdi TB Hospital. This situation placed additional strain on resources and personnel.
The hospital's ongoing renovations have been in progress for over 14 months. Significant strides have been made in restoring wards 4, 7, and 11, allowing patient care to successfully resume in these areas. Repairs on wards 4A, 8, and 12 are also nearing completion, despite the challenges associated with renovating the hospital's heritage structure.
The addition of 300 beds is expected to greatly enhance KEM Hospital’s ability to meet the growing healthcare needs of Mumbai’s population.
One of the key improvements involves the newly renovated wards, each now designed to accommodate 90 to 100 patients, a significant increase from the previous capacity of 60 to 75. This change will help reduce the hospital’s reliance on temporary facilities and significantly enhance overall patient care.
With these changes, the hospital aims to reinforce its commitment to providing high-quality medical care, ensuring that patients receive timely and effective treatment in a well-equipped environment.
