KIMS Health doctors remove 6.5 kg tumor from woman's uterus
Thiruvananthapuram: A huge tumor, weighing 6.5 kg, was successfully removed from the uterus of a lady hailing from Kollam. The tumor, which was almost as big as a nine-month-old uterus, was removed in a three-hour surgery by KIMS HEALTH Thiruvananthapuram.
Tumor is an uncontrolled, progressive growth of abnormal tissue in any part of the body. The lady was admitted to KIMS HEALTH with severe swelling and abdomen pain.
During the primary examinations, it was found that the tumor growing in the uterus is the cause of the intense pain. It was only after the expert examinations in the MRI scan, it came to know that the source of the tumor was the uterus. Understanding the risk of how much it would affect the other organs, the doctors decided to remove the uterus.
It is very rare for a tumor of this much size to form in the uterus. Such tumors may even affect kidney and colon function. Also, it was a challenging task to remove such a huge tumor without affecting other organs, said Dr. Sajith Mohan R, Consultant Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The patient was suffering from abdominal pain and swelling for the past one year, but the fear of going to the hospital made the condition complicated. Dr Sajith further added that when there is an abdominal pain or swelling the person has to immediately consultant a doctor and should never hesitate to do so, if left ignored it can lead to severe complications.
The surgery was led by a medical team consisting of Dr. Rafeekha. P, Senior Consultant Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Sajith Mohan R and Dr. Valli, Consultant, Department of Anesthesia. After the postoperative care, the patient got discharged fully recovered in the joy of relieving the long suffering pain.
