Kozhikode medical college security guards assaulted by unidentified men, complaint lodged
Kozhikode: Demanding quick action against the assault of three security guards and a media person who were brutally thrashed by a gang, a protest was staged in front of Kozhikode Medical College by members of the Medical College Staff Council. The CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media.
The attack took place on Wednesday when a couple visited the medical college to talk with the hospital superintendent but was stopped by the security guard. Since the couple had no pass to meet with the superintendent, they were denied permission. Angered by the denial, the man called his friend in front of the hospital. Chaos broke out at the hospital, and the gang later brutally thrashed three security guards.
However, at the scene, a journalist was trying to capture the incident on his mobile phone. The gang also manhandled him in the process. Later the security guards were taken to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.
The security guards have been identified as Vineshan, Sreelesh, and Ravindra Panikkar. Soon, the incident was reported to the police, and a complaint was lodged against the gang, who was accompanied by the man, Mathrubhumi reports.
As per the man's claims, he told that the security guard misbehaved with his wife, which led to the commotion at the hospital.
Seeking justice for the matter, the Medical College Staff Council staged a protest in front of the hospital.
Meanwhile, the journalist identified as P. Shamsudhee with Medical College police filed a petition, and CCTV visuals were submitted as evidence of the incident.
When the police were investigating the CCTV, it was revealed that the assaulters had covered their faces with masks and helmets to avoid being caught in the act. The gang has not yet been arrested by the police even after knowing their whereabouts, which raises suspicion among others.
Allegations came to the fore that the couple might be from the Democratic Youth Federation of India workers and hence may get away from the matter.
Condemning the attack, office-bearers of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists told The Hindu that Shamsudheen had, in fact, survived a murder attempt along with the security guards. They alleged that the gang members had attempted to throttle him after smashing his spectacles.
On the other hand, the woman lodged a complaint against the security guards for allegedly misbehaving and grabbing her hand.
It was informed by the police that both cases, as well as the case related to the attack on the journalist would be investigated.
