Kozhikode Medical College's HIV Testing Laboratory Receives NABL Accreditation

Kozhikode: The HIV Testing Laboratory under the Microbiology Department of Kozhikode Medical College, managed by the Kerala AIDS Control Society, has been accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) as per ISO 15189:2022 standards.
This accreditation, effective retrospectively from 2024, certifies the lab to meet the most modern and globally recognised standards.
At this laboratory, HIV testing is provided free of cost to patients without requiring OP tickets or referrals. Additionally, vital follow-up tests for HIV-positive individuals—such as CD4 testing and viral load testing—are also completely free.

Since the lab is accredited under ISO 15189:2022 by NABL, the reports issued are internationally recognised.
Kozhikode Medical College hosts an advanced lab infrastructure for testing various diseases. It also houses the Regional Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL), one of only ten such regional labs in the country, equipped to detect viruses, including Nipah, news agency UNI reported.
The lab is equipped with RT-PCR facilities for Nipah testing and is in the process of establishing a BSL-3 (Biosafety Level 3) laboratory.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that four patients died and around 200 others were evacuated from the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (KMCH), after a fire and heavy smoke filled the casualty ward. The incident occurred after an explosion, reportedly caused by a short circuit from the UPS installed in the room.
There was panic as a large amount of smoke and fire was seen coming out from the Super speciality block of the Kozhikode Medical College hospital (KMCH), officials said.
The fire seen in the UPS room of the casualty ward in the block led to the evacuation of around 200 patients from several wards of the six-story building, but there were no reports of any casualty or injury.
