Nashik: More than 100 medical students of SMBT Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center in Igatpuri complained of nausea and stomach pain from possible food poisoning, 55 of them continue to be under treatment at the campus hospital.
Although half of the medical students are getting treatment at the SMBT hospital, others were discharged post-treatment, an official informed PTI on Thursday.
These students from SMBT Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre in Dharmagaon in the district’s Igatpuri taluka complained of nausea and stomach upset on Wednesday, he said.

"Some 100-125 students felt distressed after having lunch in the facility’s canteen, following which they were admitted in the SMBT Hospital on the campus. Most have been discharged. Some 50-55 students continue to be in hospital under observation,” a functionary from the SMBT Charitable Trust told PTI.
The operations of the canteen have been contracted to a private firm, police said. An official of Wadivarhe police station put the number of students who suffered from food poisoning at 89 and said the incident was being probed as a medico-legal case.
Earlier on Friday around 89 students were reported to have been fallen ill due to food poisoning after consuming lunch on Wednesday.
Students and employees at the private medical college are currently in a state of panic because of the incident since most of them consume the food prepared at the college kitchen. According to TOI reports, there are around 3,000 students studying at the institute, including 500 residential teaching and non-teaching staff.
When asked about the matter, Taluka medical officer (TMO) of Igatpuri M B Deshmukh said “It is yet to be ascertained if it was a case of gastro or food poisoning. However, we have categorized it as actuate diarrheal disease and collected samples of food, water and stool. The samples have been sent to a laboratory and the results are awaited."
An official statement of the medical college over the matter is pending and is expected to be released soon.
