MLAs Seek Fair Distribution of Specialist Doctors in Malappuram
Malappuram: The shortage of specialist doctors in Malappuram district emerged as a major concern at the recent District Development Committee (DDC) meeting, with local MLAs calling for immediate action.
According to the news reports, MLAs P. Abdul Hameed and Kurukkoli Moideen raised the issue during the meeting, which was presided over by District Collector V.R. Vinod.

District Medical Officer T.K. Jayanthy noted that a proposal for 595 doctor posts in the district had been submitted to the government. The Collector advised following up with the Health Department.
During the meeting, Tirur MLA Kurukkoli Moideen also raised concerns about delays in the supply of medicines for cancer patients at Tirur District Hospital. Despite patients making payments, medicines were reportedly not being supplied by the Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL). The Collector directed the DMO to coordinate with KMSCL and resolve the issue promptly.
Speaking to the Hindu, Dr. Jayanthy said that cancer OP and chemotherapy services were being provided at the Tirur District Hospital on all days except Sundays. She explained that due to a shortage of doctors in the hospital’s oncology department, services such as mammography and chemotherapy were being offered only on alternate days.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that, facing a severe shortage of doctors affecting services at Peravoor Taluk Hospital, the Kerala Government Medical Officers' Association (KGMOA) has announced a protest, urging the Health Department to take immediate corrective action. The hospital, which caters to a large population in the region, is currently operating with just 14 doctors, including the medical superintendent.
