Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences to add more beds, undergo renovation

Mandya: The Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) is set to undergo an upgrade with plans to increase its bed capacity and implement major renovations aimed at improving healthcare delivery in the region.

The announcement was made by N. Cheluvarayaswamy, Minister in charge of Mandya district, following a high-level meeting in Bengaluru with Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil and Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao.

Both ministers assured Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy of their full support and commitment to facilitating the growth and advancement of the medical college.

Currently, the MIMS hospital operates with 400 beds but treats over 800 patients daily, leading to overcrowding and strain on available infrastructure. To address this, Minister Cheluvarayaswamy proposed expanding the facility into an 850-bed hospital.

In response, Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil directed officials to renew environmental clearance and submit a formal proposal for an immediate upgrade to a 500-bed capacity as the first phase of the expansion.

Officials were also directed to prepare a detailed project report covering the construction and renovation of the emergency and minor surgery units, cancer treatment unit, laundry facilities, and additional wards, besides power supply upgrades, reports The Hindu.

Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao also emphasized the need to enhance rural healthcare and issued instructions for the upgradation of seven taluk hospitals and several Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the Mandya district.

The meeting saw participation from several elected representatives, including MLAs Ramesh Bandisiddegowda, Ravikumar Ganiga, Darshan Puttannaiah, Uday Gowda, and MLC Madhu Madegowda, all of whom offered inputs on the medical college’s development.

To ensure efficient implementation, the ministers directed Mandya Deputy Commissioner Kumar to oversee the execution of the decisions taken during the meeting.

Also present were Principal Secretary (Medical Education) Mohammad Mohsin, Principal Secretary (Health) Harsh Gupta, and other senior officials.
