NBMCH Boosts Cardiac Care with New Equipments
Siliguri: In a bid to improve cardiac care, North Bengal Medical College Hospital (NBMCH), the largest state-run referral hospital in the state, is upgrading its cardiology department with the installation of advanced diagnostic equipment.
The two key machines being installed are the treadmill and Holter monitor, both of which essential for diagnosing heart conditions. The treadmill will be used to conduct a stress test, helping in evaluation how the heart responds to physical exercise. On the other hand, the Holter monitor records the heart’s electrical activity over an extended period, allowing doctors to identify any irregularities in heart rhythm. Currently, these tests are not available at the hospital, forcing patients to seek similar services from private clinics or laboratories.

According to the news reports, a source from the NBMCH explained that although the machines had been available for some time, their installation had been delayed due to space constraints. However, with the recent relocation of the intensive coronary care unit (ICCU) and the indoor services of the cardiology unit to the newly constructed super-speciality block, there is now sufficient space for the machines to be properly installed and operated.
Sanjay Mallick, the medical superintendent-cum-vice-principal of NBMCH, highlighted the hospital’s commitment to expanding its cardiac services. He mentioned that they are also in the process of getting a portable cardiac catheterization lab or cath lab.
According to Telegraph India, he said, “This cath lab will enable doctors and technicians at the cardiology department to provide more comprehensive cardiac care to the patients.”
This advanced facility will allow doctors and technicians to conduct minimally invasive tests to assess the flow of blood through arteries and veins.
In addition to the treadmill and Holter monitor, NBMCH plans to introduce Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy Pacemakers (CRTP) in the near future. These advanced pacemakers will be offered to patients who require them, further enhancing the hospital’s patient care facility.
Speaking to Telegraph India, Mallick added, “These facilities will largely help the population across north Bengal to get advanced cardiac treatment at minimal costs.”
