Newborn allegedly abducted from Nagpur Hospital, recovered safely

Police recovered a newborn girl allegedly kidnapped from Daga Hospital after tracing the accused through an intensive citywide search and CCTV surveillance.
Nagpur: A one-day-old baby girl who was allegedly abducted from Daga Hospital in Nagpur was safely recovered following an intensive citywide search operation that lasted around eight hours, bringing relief to her family.
Police traced the newborn to Yashodhara Nagar after expanding the investigation across several areas of the city.
The newborn was under the care of her grandmother, Meena Hadatkar, 50, when a burqa-clad woman approached her inside the hospital. According to police, the woman claimed that the family could receive benefits under a government scheme and offered to help with the registration process.

The woman allegedly took the family's Aadhaar details and mobile number before accompanying the woman, who was carrying the baby, towards another hospital ward. She then reportedly told the grandmother that the infant needed to be taken inside for a thumb impression and biometric verification. The woman took the baby and did not return, reports UNI.
When she realised that the woman was missing, she searched the hospital and alerted the authorities. The Tehsil police registered a case and launched an investigation. Senior police officers, including Zonal DCP Rahul Madne and senior inspector Sanjay Mendhe, reached the hospital.
Police examined CCTV footage from the hospital and surrounding areas. Several cameras were reportedly not functioning, but available footage showed a burqa-clad woman entering the hospital around 11:35 am and leaving about an hour later. The infant was not visible in the footage.
The search was subsequently expanded to several localities, with CCTV footage from areas including Mominpura and Yashodhara Nagar being examined. Police teams, including the anti-trafficking cell, were involved in the operation, with CCTV checks reportedly covering around 250 localities.
The breakthrough came after photographs and information about the missing newborn circulated on WhatsApp. According to police, the accused's family members recognised the woman from the circulating information and alerted authorities.
Police reached her location in Yashodhara Nagar and recovered the infant, who was later reunited with her parents at Yashodhara Nagar police station, reports Times of India.
Police said the accused had allegedly taken the newborn after the death of her own baby and was preparing to take the infant to Aurangabad. During the operation, she reportedly sustained serious injuries after jumping from a moving autorickshaw and was taken to Mayo Hospital.
Senior police inspector Yunus Chand Shaikh confirmed the baby's recovery. The investigation into the alleged abduction is continuing.
