NIMS resident doctors call off strike following security assurances
Hyderabad: Following assurances from the hospital management on enhanced security measures, the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) on Saturday called off its strike, with outpatient department (OPD) and elective medical services resuming normal operations.
The strike was initially launched after a junior resident doctor was allegedly verbally abused and threatened by relatives of a patient.
RDA spokesperson Dr M Raju said the patient, aged around 60, had been admitted to the emergency department with bleeding in the brain and was receiving treatment. A neurology consultation and CT head scan were advised, along with Foley catheterisation. “Several emergency patients were waiting, so the PG doctor moved to attend to another patient while the equipment required for catheterisation was being arranged. By the time it was brought, the patient had passed urine. The attendants then confronted the doctor and questioned when doctors were being paid from public money, yet they were not treating, Dr Raju said, reports Deccan Chronicle.
Security personnel and the duty resident medical officer (RMO) reached the spot, while other resident doctors also gathered after being alerted. The attendants subsequently left the area, Dr Raju said. The junior resident later submitted a written complaint to the RMO.
Following discussions with the RDA, the NIMS management agreed to implement additional security measures and strengthen the existing system to prevent incidents of violence against healthcare workers.
The hospital management has also registered FIRs in connection with similar incidents reported on August 31 and September 16, 2026.
As part of the measures, NIMS has established a dedicated Security and Safety Committee to review existing protocols, strengthen violence-prevention mechanisms and streamline emergency responses.
The hospital management has further agreed to upgrade security infrastructure by deploying Quick Response Teams (QRTs), increasing the number of security personnel, setting up police outposts, expanding CCTV surveillance and installing panic buttons.
The RDA submitted specific amendments demanding clear deadlines for implementation, clear response times for violent incidents, and the creation of Violence/Incident Review and Counselling Committees. The RDA expressed gratitude to the NIMS Director and management for their constructive response, reports Telangana Today.
While calling off the strike to prioritise patient care, the RDA said it would continue to monitor the implementation of the promised security measures to ensure a safe and secure working environment for all healthcare professionals.
