PGI Chandigarh boosts Clinical Research with access to over 28,000 case records

PGIMER, Chandigarh
Chandigarh: In a move aimed at enhancing clinical research and medical education, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has retrieved and issued approximately 28,585 medical case records to resident doctors and scholars for official use.
According to PGIMER officials, the retrieved case records are now being used by doctors, resident physicians, and PhD scholars for case-based analysis, retrospective research, diagnostic innovation, and treatment trend studies. These records are essential for clinical trials.
As part of a broader modernisation drive, PGIMER is also digitising patient records to build a centralised digital data bank, offering researchers faster and more efficient access to older files.

The process of requesting, tracking, and returning case files has now been fully digitised, making the system more efficient and transparent. Speaking to TNIE, a resident doctor from the Department of Medicine shared, “Earlier, it took time to get patient files, but now the file request process has become much smoother. Utilising such a large patient database for education and research is a valuable resource for doctors and medical students, and it will also help in shaping future health policies.”
Anonymised case files are also being shared with resident doctors to support medical education and case discussions. The Case Records Department plays a key role in this process, coordinating with various departments to ensure records are securely shared for research, educational, and administrative purposes. It also upholds data confidentiality and protects patient privacy.
The availability of real patient data is helping postgraduate students and researchers compare new treatment protocols, validate diagnostic trends, and establish baseline data for multi-centre research studies.
