PM Modi to virtually inaugurate 3 major healthcare projects at PGI Chandigarh

Chandigarh- To strengthen healthcare facilities at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), Chandigarh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to virtually inaugurate three major facilities soon, including the Advanced Neuroscience Centre, the Mother and Child Care Centre, and a new Critical Care Block.
The move follows a similar virtual inauguration in 2024, when the Prime Minister inaugurated a 100-bed satellite centre of PGI in Ferozepur.
The launch will mark the formal commencement of projects worth approximately ₹1,000 crore. The Advanced Neuroscience Centre, costing ₹490 crore, received approval in 2017, and outpatient services began there on April 20. Its construction started in 2020, and it was initially scheduled to be inaugurated by Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda.
The Mother and Child Care Centre, built at a cost of ₹485 crore, is ready and expected to become fully operational this month. This five-story, 430-bed facility recently drew attention when advanced medical equipment worth ₹150 crore, donated by Infosys in 2024, remained unused and unopened while awaiting an official launch.
Along with this, the recently constructed critical care block will also be inaugurated virtually; once the dates are finalised, this will significantly strengthen the region's healthcare infrastructure.
According to the TOI news report, sources at the institute have stated that the administration is preparing for a digital event, as the Prime Minister is unlikely to visit in person at this time. Therefore, officials are finalising the virtual arrangements while keeping the plans confidential to avoid any last-minute technical glitches.
The PGI official also mentioned that while the institute has previously live-streamed numerous events at national and international levels, a relay of such prestige requires thorough preparation and consultation with third parties. Meanwhile, a committee has also been constituted to look into the matter.
Notably, Modi last visited the institute during its annual convocation in 2015.
