Pregnant woman dies after UP doctor allegedly performs surgery while intoxicated

Shahjahanpur: A doctor allegedly under the influence of alcohol performed surgery on a 22-year-old pregnant woman at a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur district, following which she died, police said.
The woman, a resident of Kakarha village under Puwayan police station, went into labour on September 8. She delivered a baby boy following the surgery, but her condition deteriorated soon after. The newborn is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, police said.
According to police, the woman’s family was initially taking her to a government hospital in a private ambulance. However, the ambulance driver reportedly stopped outside a private hospital in Puwayan and suggested that the family consult a doctor there.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Shahjahanpur additional superintendent of police (rural) Diksha Bhaware said the family subsequently consulted the doctor, who was present at the private hospital. According to the FIR, the doctor called another doctor from the city.
Police said the second doctor arrived at the hospital in an inebriated condition but proceeded to perform the surgery. Following the procedure, the woman delivered a baby boy, but her condition subsequently deteriorated.
The doctor then advised the family to shift her to Bareilly for further treatment. However, she died while being taken to Bareilly, police said.
Following the woman’s death, Puwayan police registered a case on Thursday evening against the two doctors under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Police said an investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the woman's death and the allegations against the doctors.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that, in a shocking incident, a woman and her newborn died after a delivery at a private hospital that had been sealed by the district administration and health department in 2025, officials said.
