Probe ordered into death of 11-year-old boy at Kolkata Medical College

Kolkata: Kolkata Medical College and Hospital on Monday constituted a four-member committee to investigate the death of an 11-year-old boy following allegations of medical negligence by his family, a senior official said.
The committee, headed by Professor Rakesh Mondal of the Paediatrics Department, has been asked to submit its report at the earliest, the official said.
According to PTI, the other members are Sujoy Maitra, head of the Paediatric Surgery Department, Imran Ahmed of Cardiology and Sanjay Mondal of Medicine, he added.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the family of an 11-year-old boy who died within 90 minutes of being admitted to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital on Sunday has alleged medical negligence. The family accused the hospital staff of administering an incorrect injection, prompting the authorities to promise an investigation into the complaint.

The deceased, identified as a resident of Howrah's Andul, was brought to the hospital on Sunday morning with abdominal pain and admitted to its Mother and Child Hub, the official said.
"The committee has been asked to examine the case in detail and submit its findings as soon as possible. The facts will be established after the medical records and treatment details have been reviewed," he said.
The boy's family alleged that he died within one-and-a-half hours of admission and that his condition deteriorated after he was administered an injection.
Some junior doctors said the child's symptoms could have warranted an intramuscular Rantac IM injection. However, some doctors claimed that he went into shock after receiving the injection and subsequently suffered a cardiac arrest.
The incident triggered tension on the hospital premises on Sunday afternoon, with the boy's relatives protesting over the alleged medical negligence.
