Protest erupts at Jajpur Hospital after woman dies post-delivery

Medical Negligence?
Jajpur: In a recent case of alleged medical negligence, a woman died following childbirth at a private hospital in Jajpur district, triggering widespread tension and protests by her family members and local residents on Tuesday.
According to the news reports, the woman from the Jajpur Khandara area was admitted to the private hospital on December 24 for delivery. Her family stated that her condition deteriorated after a surgical procedure at the hospital, prompting the authorities to shift her to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, for advanced treatment. Despite efforts by doctors there, she succumbed on Monday night.

Following the incident, angry locals and relatives staged a protest by placing her body in front of the health facility, demanding its immediate closure and adequate compensation.
The incident has further escalated after reports emerged that another woman from the Bari–Ratnagiri area, who was admitted to the same hospital on December 24 for delivery, also died after giving birth to a baby boy. The two deaths have intensified accusations of serious lapses in medical care at the facility.
Speaking to Pragativadi, health experts pointed out that Odisha continues to struggle with a high maternal mortality rate. Government data shows thousands of maternal deaths in recent years, highlighting gaps in healthcare delivery, especially in rural areas.
In response to the incidents, the hospital authorities allegedly locked the premises and fled. Police personnel reached the spot and initiated an investigation into the allegations. However, at the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued by either the hospital authorities or the police.
“The hospital authorities had told us that it was already time for childbirth, and we must go for a caesarean operation. The surgical operation was conducted on her on Wednesday morning,” the deceased’s mother-in-law alleged, reports Odisha TV.
