Protest erupts outside Phagwara Hospital over alleged medical negligence

Jalandhar- Following the death of an unborn child during delivery, members of the Yuva Vikas Morcha, led by its President Anu Sahota, staged a protest outside Civil Hospital Phagwara over allegations of medical negligence.
Protesters accused the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) and another doctor of negligence and an irresponsible approach in handling the pregnancy case. They alleged that the unborn child died in the womb due to a delay in conducting the delivery.
During the protest, the protestors raised slogans against the hospital doctors and demanded strict action in the case of alleged medical negligence.
Members of the Yuva Vikas Morcha also warned that if the administration fails to take action, the organisation will further intensify its agitation in the coming days. They also demanded accountability from the hospital administration and emphasised the need for responsible healthcare services in government hospitals.
However, the protest ended peacefully after the demonstrators submitted their demands to the officials. Activists of the organisation extended their support to the bereaved family.
Meanwhile, the Senior Medical Officer stated that the Civil Surgeon of Kapurthala has constituted a three-member inquiry committee, comprising Dr Parminder Kaur (Gynaecologist), Dr Anil Sheemar (Anaesthetist), and Dr Harpreet Momi (Paediatrician).
The pregnant woman has been identified as Kiran, the wife of Sagar Kaler and a resident of Khera Nangal in Phagwara, Kapurthala district, Punjab.
According to the Tribune news report, Kiran was pregnant with her third child and was undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital, Phagwara.
The delivery date was scheduled for May 4, 2026; therefore, the family arrived at the hospital very early in the morning for the delivery.
However, Sagar alleged that despite repeated requests and the patient's critical condition, the doctors failed to perform their duties on time and delayed the delivery process until the afternoon. Therefore, the unborn child died due to the delay in medical intervention.
Hence, calling this incident a case of gross medical negligence, Sagar Kaler appealed to the SP of Phagwara and health officials to take strict action against the doctors involved and ensure justice for his family.
