RGUHS plans 900-bed high-tech hospital at Ramanagara campus

Karnataka- In a significant decision, the Senate and Syndicate of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) have approved the construction of a 900-bed, high-tech hospital for clinical practice at the university's new campus currently under development in Ramanagara.
In this regard, the university has submitted a detailed proposal to the state government and is awaiting approval to commence work.
Speaking to The Hindu, RGUHS Vice-Chancellor BC Bhagavan stated that a proposal has been sent to the National Medical Commission (NMC) to open a new government medical college in Ramanagara this year. This college will be part of the university itself, and it is mandatory for it to have its own attached hospital.
Therefore, a decision has been made to construct a 900-bed high-tech hospital at the new RGUHS campus, and a master plan for this purpose has been prepared and submitted to the government.
Meanwhile, the construction of the new RGUHS campus near Archakarahalli in Ramanagara is proceeding in full swing at a cost of approximately ₹600 crore.
According to the original plan, the complex was to include medical, dental, pharmacy, and nursing colleges, in addition to a 250-bed super-speciality hospital and a 750-bed high-tech hospital. However, the government dropped the high-tech hospital and approved the rest.
Meanwhile, the state government has decided to open a new government medical college in Ramnagar. It has already sent a proposal to the NMC to start the medical college by utilising the district hospital.
However, cardiologist and Bengaluru Rural MP CN Manjunath raised objections regarding the same letter to the Vice-Chancellor of RGUHS on January 14, 2026. Subsequently, the proposal for the high-tech hospital was revived, eventually leading to the proposal being placed before the university's Senate and Syndicate.
Hence, Dr Bhagwan said, “The district hospital in Ramanagara has 300 beds, and the taluk hospital has 150 beds. Both of these hospitals can be combined, and a medical college can be established. However, the 450 beds available from both hospitals are sufficient for the training of only 100 students. Such a small number of available beds will not support the increase in medical seats in the future. Additionally, since clinical practice is essential for students, we need our own medical hospital”.
