Ruby General Hospital launches Advanced Bone Marrow Transplant Unit to boost cancer care
Kolkata- To advance cancer care, Ruby General Hospital on Friday inaugurated a specialised 'Stem Cell and Cellular Therapy Transplantation Unit', commonly known as the 'Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit.'
The unit was inaugurated by Directors Sourav Datta and Ruby Datta, in the presence of Founder-Chairman Kamal Kumar Datta.
Hospital authorities stated that full services at the unit will commence next week. The cost of treatment at the facility is expected to range between ₹8 lakh and ₹13 lakh.
Located within the hospital's cancer centre, the new unit will feature six specialised isolation rooms equipped with High-Efficiency Particulate Air filtration systems. These systems are designed to capture microscopic particles present in the air. This unit will treat patients suffering from leukaemia, lymphoma, aplastic anaemia, and sickle cell diseases. The hospital has also provided separate rooms for family members to stay with pediatric patients.
Speaking to The Telegraph India, the Chief General Manager (Operations), Subhashish Datta, stated that the new facilities would be sterilised, as keeping the rooms germ-free is crucial.
Additionally, Kamal Kumar stated that this state-of-the-art facility will provide life-saving treatment to patients.
It was a long-standing dream of Dr Kamal Kumar Datta, Chairman and Managing Director of Ruby General Hospital, to establish a world-class 'Stem Cell and Cellular Therapy Transplantation Unit.'
Dr Datta observed that BMT patients from Eastern India used to travel to South India or abroad for better treatment. Therefore, he ensured that Kolkata would house one of India's most modern BMT units.
Furthermore, Senior Haematologist and Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist Tupan Kanti Dolai stated that this unit will help address the existing gap in access to specialised transplant care in Eastern India.
A bone marrow transplant is a specialised medical procedure in which damaged or diseased bone marrow is replaced with healthy stem cells. It is often required by patients suffering from leukaemia and lymphoma, severe anaemia, aplastic anaemia, and certain genetic or immune-related disorders.
