New Delhi: A fresh proposal for the construction of a maternity and child facilities wing, and hostels in center-run Safdarjung Hospital has been submitted by the hospital authorities to the union government.
The proposal which is worth Rs 1200 crore has been submitted after a delay of three years caused due to the COVID pandemic, informed the authorities. The medical superintendent of the hospital Dr B L Sherwal said that the proposal was sent again since they could not begin the scheduled construction work due to the COVID pandemic.

He added that the super-specialty block and emergency ward has already been completed four years ago but the work on the maternity and childcare wing still remains to be completed.
The cost of the wing is estimated at Rs 900 crore, and the remaining Rs 300 crore out of the proposed Rs 1200 crore would be used for building a hostel with 600 rooms for resident doctors and a nursing hostel with 1,000 rooms. Dr Sherwal said, "The hostel project will begin by next year after getting approval from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and other statutory bodies. It is expected to be completed in about two years."
Currently, there are 650 beds including the obstetrics and gynaecology department, paediatric and paediatric surgery in the hospital, and with this proposal, an additional new 1000 beds would be added. According to the officials, the obstetric and gynaecology department remains the most buy as they get over 100 deliveries per day, reports the Times of India. Around 30% of the deliveries are cesarian in nature.
Federation of resident doctors association vice president Dr Anuj Agarwal, who is also general secretary of the resident doctors association at Safdarjung hospital stated that they have been demanding hostel rooms for a long time and called this decision a good step by the administration.
