SGPGIMS launches UP's first endoscopy lab for head and neck cancer

Lucknow: The state-of-the-art government-run outpatient department (OPD) endoscopy lab for head and neck cancer patients was inaugurated at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, on Saturday to mark World Head and Neck Cancer Day.
The inauguration was part of 'Spandan: Cancer, Healing and Beyond'—an awareness program organised by the Department of Head and Neck Surgery to highlight the importance of early screening, rehabilitation, and survivor support.
The new facility will enable physicians to perform advanced visual examinations, immediate biopsies, and carry out precise follow-ups in an outpatient setting without unnecessary delays. The facility also bridges a long-standing gap by directly integrating high-definition endoscopic evaluation into the daily outpatient clinical workflow.
Furthermore, this dedicated setup enables medical teams to evaluate suspected lesions in the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and sinonasal tract during the patient's initial visit.
According to the TOI news report, the facility was inaugurated by SGPGI MS Dean Professor Shalin Kumar and Chief Medical Superintendent Professor Devendra Gupta. It is expected to strengthen early diagnosis, in-clinic procedures, and post-treatment monitoring for head and neck cancer patients.
In this regard, Professor RK Dhiman, Director of SGPGIMS, stated that early diagnosis, public awareness, and a multidisciplinary approach are key to improving outcomes for head and neck cancer.
Meanwhile, on this occasion, cancer survivors were presented with roses in honour of their courage and spirit. In a session titled "Voices of Hope," they shared their experiences regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, emphasising the importance of timely medical assistance.
Specialists in head and neck surgery, radiotherapy, plastic surgery, and psychiatry discussed various aspects of cancer care, while dietitians advised patients on nutritional support during and after treatment. The program concluded with an interactive Q&A session with the patients.
Ultimately, combining advanced clinical diagnostics with robust rehabilitation programs fosters comprehensive treatment, enhances self-reliance, and significantly improves the long-term quality of life for cancer survivors.
