Siliguri District Hospital To Launch First Government-Run Infertility Clinic

Siliguri District Hospital Launches Infertility Clinic
Siliguri: The Siliguri District Hospital (SDH) is set to launch a government-run infertility clinic within its maternity wing, marking the first such facility in the region. The initiative is part of a broader effort by the state health department to strengthen public healthcare services in North Bengal, addressing the rising number of couples seeking medical assistance for infertility.
According to Telegraph India, Doctors at SDH report witnessing a sharp increase in such cases. “We are seeing more and more couples coming in with infertility-related issues,” said Chandan Ghosh, superintendent of SDH. “A survey is underway to track and understand the nature of these cases,” he added.
Couples in North Bengal have had limited options for infertility treatments within the government sector. This lack of accessible care has often led them to seek help from private clinics. The new clinic at SDH will provide systematic diagnosis, counselling, and basic infertility treatments, such as essential tests and follow-up care.
The clinic, set to open soon, will offer consultations on weekdays, ensuring regular appointments and ongoing care. Medical experts estimate that approximately 80% of infertility cases can be effectively managed with medication, counselling, and minor interventions, without the need for more advanced procedures like in-vitro fertilization (IVF).

Tulsi Pramanik, Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) of Darjeeling district, mentioned that discussions are underway to explore the feasibility of introducing IVF facilities at government hospitals. However, it was emphasized that not all cases require IVF, as many couples can conceive with proper guidance, treatment, and lifestyle adjustments.
Health experts and officials have welcomed the establishment of the infertility clinic as a progressive step towards more inclusive and accessible reproductive healthcare. The clinic will particularly benefit underserved communities in rural North Bengal, where access to high-quality healthcare is limited.
