Sterling Hospitals saves life of 63-year-old patient with Novel Impella Heart Pump Technology
Ahmedabad: Sterling Hospitals, a leading hospital in Gujarat, announced a groundbreaking medical procedure by a team of skilled cardiologists. Led by renowned interventional cardiologist, Dr Rasesh Pothiwala (Director, Department of Cardiology at Sterling Hospitals – Gurukul), the team successfully saved the life of a 63-year-old female patient utilizing the innovative Impella Heart Pump technology.
This procedure marks the first-ever utilization of the Impella Heart Pump device in the state of Gujarat, signifying a significant advancement in cardiac care.
The patient presented to us was in a very critical situation with hyperacute MI, severe left ventricular failure, and also in a shocked condition. Her CAG shows LMCA to LAD & LCX-99% lesion with no flow in the main artery. Such critical cases normally have 80% mortality and may develop multi-organ failure, particularly renal shutdown and the requirement of dialysis, and prolonged hospital stay.
So with the help of the Impella CC Device (Left Ventricular Assist Device/Artificial Heart), which was used for the first time in Gujarat, we not only saved the patient’s life but were able to discharge without any complications within 2 days.
Dr Rasesh Pothiwala expressed his enthusiasm for this groundbreaking achievement, stating, "We are thrilled to have successfully utilized the Impella Heart Pump device for the first time in Gujarat. This advanced technology allowed us to perform a high-risk angioplasty procedure, giving our patient a new lease on life. We believe that the Impella Heart Pump has the potential to revolutionize cardiac care in our region, benefiting numerous patients in need."
The success of this groundbreaking procedure not only highlights the expertise and dedication of the medical team at Sterling Hospitals but also sets a precedent for innovative treatments in cardiac care.
For such complex cases, we have a dedicated “Cardiac Shock Team” (comprising of Cardiac Surgeon, Cardiologists, Intensivist, and Anaesthesiologists), which acts immediately for such critical patients and also reduces mortality by 80% comparatively.
Dr Simmardeep S Gill, MD & CEO of Sterling Hospitals, emphasized the institution's commitment to advancing medical technology and delivering exceptional patient care. "The introduction of the Impella Heart Pump technology solidifies our dedication and commitment to providing the best possible outcomes for our patients. We strive to remain at the forefront of medical advancements and continue to enhance the quality of care we offer," he said.
The introduction of the Impella Heart Pump device in Gujarat represents a significant milestone in cardiac care. Its unique capabilities in providing mechanical circulatory support during complex interventions open up new possibilities for patients with critical cardiac conditions. This achievement serves as a beacon of hope for individuals facing similar challenges in the region.
