Stray dogs nibble body awaiting autopsy at MP Hospital

Narmadapuram: In a shocking incident, dogs reportedly attacked and nibbled on the body of an accident victim, awaiting post-mortem at a government hospital in Madhya Pradesh's Narmadapuram. In response, the authorities have ordered an investigation, an official said on Sunday.
The incident occurred at the district hospital on Friday night, the official said.
The body of Nikhil Chourasia (21), who died in an accident near Palanpur, was kept for post-mortem, the hospital’s civil surgeon Sudhir Vijayvargiya said, news agency PTI reported.

He said an investigation would be conducted, a show-cause notice would be issued to the security guard and assured that steps would be taken to improve the security at the facility.
Confirming the occurrence, Civil Surgeon Dr Sudhir Vijayavargiya explained to IANS that the hospital lacks a dedicated freezer or facility for storing bodies due to its outdated building infrastructure, though a new building is under construction.
When the victim’s grieving family arrived to collect the body, they were devastated to find parts of his neck torn apart. Overcome with sorrow and rage, they confronted the hospital staff about the negligence. When asked if it is not an unintentional tampering with the body, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Parag Saini told IANS that the viral video has brought widespread attention to the incident.
The deceased man’s cousin, Ankit Gohile, said he had stepped out to drink water and saw a dog fleeing with a piece of flesh from the body when he returned.
A complaint has been lodged in the matter, he said, accusing the hospital management of negligence.
According to the latest annual report of the state health department, a total of Rs 13,270.31 crore was allocated for the health budget, but the department could only invest 89 per cent or Rs 11,859.87 crore during the financial year 2023-24. Of which Rs 600 crore were made available for infrastructure during the year.
