Tamil Nadu: Srirangam Government Hospital set for major upgrade with New Building
Tiruchirapalli: Health Minister Ma Subramanian has announced that the century-old buildings at Srirangam Government Hospital will be demolished to make way for a new facility aimed at enhancing healthcare services. This decision follows a surprise inspection by the Minister, during which he noted the underutilization of the existing structures.
The health minister inaugurated a new building in the Tiruchi District, emphasizing the importance of modernizing healthcare infrastructure to better serve patients. During a surprise inspection earlier today, he noted that the century-old buildings at Srirangam GH are underutilized. He announced that these buildings would be replaced with a new facility designed to provide enhanced healthcare services to patients.
Alongside Minister for Municipal Administration KN. Nehru, Mr Subramanian inaugurated 12 new buildings in the district, with a total investment of ₹5.24 crore. These facilities include an urban primary health center in Puthanathamat, costing ₹1.20 crore, and block public health units in Inamkulathur, Sirugambur, Uppiliapuram, and Thandalaiputhur, each valued at ₹50 lakh. Additional developments include nurses’ quarters at Pudur Uthamanur for ₹33.5 lakh and sub-health centers in several locations for ₹30 lakh each.

According to The Hindu, Mr Subramanian said that new buildings for government hospitals, primary health centres and sub-health centres were being built at the cost of ₹141.05 crore in the district. He said that the construction of the emergency wing and the maternity and childcare centre at the government hospital in Thuraiyur had been completed, and the process of procuring medical equipment was under way. It would be commissioned within a month.
In addition, the Minister noted that fourteen health centers in the district had received National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) certification, while five government hospitals had achieved the LaQshya certification, which focuses on improving the quality of maternity services.
During his surprise visit to the government hospitals in Srirangam and Lalgudi, Mr Subramanian inspected general and maternity wards, engaging with patients to inquire about the quality of care provided by doctors.
With improved facilities, the hospital can better serve the growing population of Srirangam and surrounding areas.
Many officials attended the event, including Collector M. Pradeep Kumar, Mayor M. Anbazhagan, Corporation Commissioner V. Saravanan, City Health Officer T. Manivannan, and Dean of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital Arshiya Begum, among others.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the state government to enhance health services and infrastructure.
