TN Govt Hospital launches single-window transgender clinic

Transgender clinic
Tiruchirappalli: In a move aimed at improving healthcare access for the transgender community, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH), Tiruchirappalli, has revamped its transgender clinic into a multidisciplinary, single-window facility offering consultations across multiple specialities under one roof.
The revamped clinic will begin functioning every Monday from July 13, replacing the earlier outpatient service model that operated alongside the urology department.
The clinic will operate between 10 am and 12 noon every Monday, allowing transgender patients to access medical consultations in a more coordinated manner. Hospital authorities said the restructuring was undertaken to simplify the treatment process for the transgender community as well as improve administrative coordination, reports The Indian Express.
MGMGH Dean Dr S Kumaravel said the new system would eliminate the need for patients to visit different departments separately. With specialists available at the same location, patients will be able to receive medical advice, support and referrals while maintaining greater privacy and comfort during their hospital visits.
As part of the initiative, the hospital will appoint a transgender community representative at the clinic. The representative will assist patients in communicating with healthcare providers, completing necessary documentation and accessing treatment benefits available under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS).
The clinic will bring together specialists from eight departments, including psychiatry, endocrinology, plastic surgery, urology, general medicine and gynaecology. The arrangement is expected to enable patients to complete multiple consultations during a single visit.
The decision to redesign the clinic followed a study visit conducted by an eight-member expert team from MGMGH to the transgender clinic at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai in late June. The team reviewed the functioning of the facility and identified practices that could be implemented in Tiruchirappalli.
A key addition to the revamped service is the involvement of a private endocrinologist for hormonal assessment and monitoring, which is an important component of gender-affirming healthcare. The specialist will evaluate patients before and during hormone therapy.
“The idea is to provide single-point care,” said Dr Mano Ananth, plastic surgeon at MGMGH and a member of the study team. “Patients can undergo psychological counselling, hormone evaluation and surgical consultation during the same visit, reducing repeated hospital visits and making the process much smoother.”
Hospital officials stated that the upgraded model could further expand gender-affirming healthcare services at MGMGH, including plans to introduce procedures such as breast implant surgeries under CMCHIS following the approach adopted in Madurai.
