Ultrasound services halted at Bilaspur Hospital after radiologist transfer

Ultrasound Services Halted
Bilaspur: Patients visiting the Regional Hospital in Bilaspur are facing inconvenience as ultrasound services have remained unavailable for nearly a week following the transfer of the hospital’s radiologist. The disruption has forced many patients to postpone diagnostic tests or seek services at private clinics.
Several patients who arrived at the hospital on Monday morning for ultrasound examinations had to return without getting the test done as the facility was not operational. Many had travelled from distant rural areas with attendants and said they had not been informed in advance of the service's unavailability. With no immediate alternative available at the government hospital, they were compelled to turn to private diagnostic centres.
Patients and attendants said the suspension of ultrasound services at the facility has added to their financial burden. They pointed out that private clinics charge significantly higher fees for ultrasound tests, which becomes difficult for economically weaker families who depend on public health institutions for affordable treatment.

Residents also expressed concern over the continued disruption of an essential diagnostic service at the district hospital. They urged the health department to take immediate steps to appoint or depute a radiologist so that patients can receive timely ultrasound services within the hospital itself.
The issue has once again highlighted the impact of staff shortages on specialised services in government healthcare facilities. Patients said delays in diagnostic investigations can affect treatment planning, especially for pregnant women, elderly patients and those requiring urgent evaluation.
Medical Superintendent Dr A K Singh said the radiologist posted at the hospital had been transferred to Tanda hospital, resulting in the suspension of ultrasound services. He said the issue has been brought to the notice of senior officials and the state government, reports Amar Ujala.
Hospital authorities said efforts are expected to restore the service. However, patients and residents have demanded a prompt solution to prevent further inconvenience and reduce dependence on private diagnostic centres for routine and essential tests.
