Viral video of patient on floor with oxygen mask at Azamgarh hospital sparks outcry

Azamgarh: A disturbing incident from a District Hospital in Azamgarh has gone viral on social media, showing a patient sitting on the floor wearing an oxygen mask, reportedly due to a shortage of beds. The video has sparked widespread criticism of the healthcare infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh.

In the video, the patient is seen sitting on the hospital floor, receiving oxygen support without access to a hospital bed or proper medical facilities. The lack of cleanliness and basic infrastructure is visible in the footage. The patient was reportedly unable to secure a hospital bed due to a shortage of medical facilities.

The incident has also drawn sharp criticism from political leaders. Congress leader Anil Yadav, who hails from Azamgarh, termed the video a stark reminder of the ground reality under the “double-engine government.”

Speaking to the Hindu, he said, “This is a real picture of the ‘health revolution’ of the double-engine government, where a patient is sitting on the floor in Azamgarh’s Sadar Hospital, wearing an oxygen mask. There is no arrangement anywhere, no bed, no clean environment, and no basic facilities. The U.P. government claims world-class healthcare services, but the reality is for everyone to see.”

Social media users reacted with anger and disbelief. One user, Bhanu Nand, shared on platform X (formerly Twitter), “The health system has deteriorated so much under the BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] government that patients are forced to treat themselves. Seeing such a picture, it seems that both the system and the government are waiting for the people to die with their eyes closed. The BJP government has completely ruined the condition of hospitals; the health system seems to be collapsing every day.”
