Vizag blood bank sealed, license suspended over safety lapses

Blood Bank Shut Down After Inspection Reveals Unqualified Staff, Poor Safety Practices
Vishakhapatnam: Following surprise inspections ordered by Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav, the Drugs Control Administration has suspended the licence and sealed M/s Vijayasri Blood Centre, a unit of Vijayasri Memorial Charitable Trust at Maharanipeta, after uncovering serious violations of blood bank safety norms.
The blood bank was found operating with unqualified staff performing critical procedures without the supervision of medical officers. Investigators also noted that specialised blood collection was being conducted without proper equipment, essential quality control systems were lacking, and blood donation camps were organised without proper documentation.

In response to these lapses, the Director and State Licensing Authority of Drugs Control Administration, M. Pandu Ranga Prasad, issued “stop forthwith” orders, suspending all activities of the facility until further notice.
Drugs Inspector M. Srinivas Rao, while implementing the order, stated that blood and blood components are life-saving products, and strict compliance with quality standards is essential to ensure patient safety and prevent life-threatening transfusion risks, reports The Hindu.
He also warned that stringent action will be taken against licensees who conduct blood bank operations or donation camps without qualified medical officers and trained staff.
The action comes as Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav recently instructed authorities to intensify monitoring of the daily patient load of government doctors.
