West Bengal approves appointment of 26 doctors at Alipurduar District Hospitals

Alipurduar: The West Bengal health department has approved the deployment of 26 additional doctors across three major government hospitals, addressing the long-standing shortage of medical staff.

Suman Kanjilal, Chairman of the Rogi Kalyan Samiti and MLA of Alipurduar, announced the development, noting that it comes in response to his direct appeal to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the state health secretary concerning the acute shortage of doctors in the district.

Speaking to Telegraph India, Kanjilal confirmed, “The chief minister has acted on my request, and 26 additional doctors will be sent to our district. Of them, 17 would be posted in the district hospital, seven at the super-speciality hospital in Falakata, and two doctors at the Birpara state general hospital.”

Currently, the district hospital operates with 64 doctors against a sanctioned strength of 82. The addition of 17 new doctors will help close this gap and enhance the hospital’s capacity to serve patients more effectively.

Similarly, Birpara State General Hospital currently has 28 doctors against 42 sanctioned posts, and the expected arrival of two additional doctors is likely to offer some relief. Meanwhile, Falakata Super-Speciality Hospital is set to strengthen its medical team with the addition of seven new doctors.

The additional doctors include specialists such as dermatologists, orthopaedic surgeons, ophthalmologists, anaesthetists, and gynaecologists. Their presence is expected to fill critical gaps in specialist care and reduce the burden on existing staff.

In addition to the doctors, the state government has also approved the installation of a CT scan and a digital X-ray machine at the district hospital.

This development is part of a broader effort by the state government to strengthen public health systems in the district. Previously, it was announced that nine state-run medical colleges and hospitals across West Bengal would be equipped with dedicated, state-of-the-art Critical Care Blocks (CCBs), with Alipurduar District Hospital being one of them.

Medical dialogues had previously reported that in a move to boost the state’s healthcare infrastructure, nine state-run medical colleges and hospitals across West Bengal will soon be equipped with dedicated, state-of-the-art Critical Care Blocks (CCBs), aimed at improving treatment for patients with severe and life-threatening conditions.
