Woman dies at SVP Hospital, probe ordered amid negligence allegations

Medical Negligence
Ahmedabad: Following allegations of medical negligence, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has ordered an inquiry after a woman died during treatment at SVP Hospital on Wednesday. The incident gained widespread attention when her daughter shared a video on social media accusing doctors of failing to provide proper care.
The deceased was admitted to the hospital on February 21 with complaints of asthma and cough. According to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials, her condition later worsened, and she was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) three days before her death after developing multiple complications. A preliminary report by the civic body stated that the woman died due to multiple organ failure.

In a video that went viral on social media, the patient’s daughter levelled serious medical negligence allegations. She claimed her mother, who had asthma and diabetes, did not receive proper care and accused the hospital of experimenting on patients under government schemes.
She stated that her mother spent four days in the general ward before doctors advised a bronchoscopy to remove phlegm from her lungs. During the procedure, she reportedly suffered an asthma attack, her condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was transferred to the ICU. The family declined a postmortem examination, citing personal reasons.
The daughter also alleged that family members were asked to sign fresh documents daily, receiving inconsistent information about her mother’s health. She claimed that the oxygen mask was pressed tightly on her mother’s face, causing bruising and bleeding, and repeated attempts to access veins for injections resulted in multiple punctures, eventually requiring a neck access point.
She further alleged that senior doctors were not giving adequate time to the patient and suggested that the family felt pressured because the treatment was being carried out under the Ayushman health card scheme, Gujrat Samachar.
In response to the allegations, the deputy municipal commissioner of AMC constituted a three-member committee to investigate the matter. The hospital superintendent confirmed that a detailed probe has been ordered and assured that strict action will be taken if any wrongdoing is found.
