Woman, unborn twins die at Sikkim Hospital; probe ordered
Gangotk- In a tragic incident, a woman and her unborn twins died after she was referred to Sikkim's STNM Hospital for advanced medical care. Her husband has alleged medical negligence in her treatment at the hospital.
The Sikkim government has constituted a five-member inquiry committee to investigate the matter, officials said on Friday. The committee has been tasked with investigating the entire sequence of events, from the patient's admission to her referral to another medical facility.
The panel will review the treatment and clinical management provided to the patient, and determine whether the medical staff adhered to the prescribed obstetrics and gynaecology protocols.
The inquiry will also assess the circumstances that led to the death of the unborn twins, and subsequently, the death of the woman following her referral.
The incident has sparked concern among the people of the state, prompting the government to order a formal inquiry into the matter. Hence, the State Government has directed the panel to submit its findings and recommendations to the competent authority within one week.
The inquiry committee comprises senior officials and medical experts, including Dr Pema Seden Lepcha, Principal Director of Health Services, and Dr Suresh Madan Rasaily, Additional Medical Superintendent of STNM Hospital.
Other members include Dr Anup Pradhan, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Central Referral Hospital; Pooja Lohar, Deputy Secretary at STNM Hospital; and Pratiksha Sharma, Under Secretary in the Department of Health and Family Welfare.
