Viral video: California-based Ophthalmologist removes 23 contact lenses from woman's eye

California: Using contact lenses on a daily basis has come with life-changing consequences for a woman after a California-based doctor removed 23 contact lenses in a row from her eyes. The shocking incident was caught in a video that went viral, making people in disbelief and concerned at the same time.

The woman in the video came to the doctor in a hurry with complaints of her eyes being in pain and having blurry vision. While examining her eyes, the doctor removed one layer of contact lenses and saw that there were other layers too. The doctor then asked her colleague to record the video and removed 23 lenses in a row.

Dr Kurteeva said that the woman forgot to take off her contact lenses each time she put them on, and the lenses kept piling up inside her eye, causing her pain, NDTV reports.
"A rare occasion when someone "forgot" to remove contact lenses at night and kept on putting a new one in every morning. 23 days in a row!!! I got to deliver the contact lens bunch yesterday in my clinic," Dr Kurteeva posted the video on Instagram on September 13.
"Delivering 23 contact lenses out of someone's eye. Real-life video from my clinic. Don't sleep in your contact lenses," reads the text super in the video.
The video went viral with over 2.9 million views and more than 81,000 likes. The people in the comment section of the video went crazy and were in shock to witness the incident.
Its always recommended that people should wear contact lenses for a maximum of 8-10 hours per day, however, going to sleep without removing the contact lenses can cause serious eye infections that may ultimately result in blindness.
While speaking with Insider, Dr Kurteeva said "Asking the patient to look down, I could see a huge, dark-purple blob of contact lenses stuck to her eye. It almost looked like a second pupil. I gently started using a Q-tip to peel the lenses apart one by one, like you would deal with a deck of cards. They were coming out in a chain, drooping down her lid. There were a lot of contact lenses — I thought this could be my Guinness Book of World Records moment. In nearly 20 years of practice, I had never seen anything like it."
"Laying out the contacts on a tissue, I separated each one with fine-tip forceps and counted 23 contact lenses. Some of them were yellow and some light blue because while the natural color of a contact lens is light blue, the stain I put in her eyes to examine had colored some of the lenses yellow. This patient was very fortunate — she could have lost her vision, scratched her cornea, or gotten an infection," she added.
