Nursing Home Slapped Rs 5 Lakh penalty for Medical Negligence after patient, newborn deaths due to gross lapses in care

Nursing Home Fined Rs 5 lakh for Medical Negligence
Malda: After a mother and her newborn son tragically died due to alleged gross lapses in medical care at a Kaliachak-based Nursing home, the Malda district administration imposed a penalty of Rs 5 lakh on the concerned Nursing Home for medical negligence.
Further, the District Administration has also recommended suspension or cancellation of the clinical establishment license of the facility named Khwaza Baba Nursing Home, Kaliachak, Malda, West Bengal.
The action comes after the tragic death of the mother and the newborn baby last month. The complaint in this regard was filed by the deceased's husband, who hails from Jharkhand.
He alleged that on June 12, he was trying to admit his pregnant wife to Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH). However, an ambulance driver misled them and took them to Khawaza Baba Nursing Home in Kaliachak instead.
As per the latest media report by the Millennium Post, the complainant alleged that "Without conducting proper medical tests, they performed a C-section at night."
Shortly after the surgery, the condition of the newborn baby deteriorated, and the family was advised to take him to Malda Medical College and Hospital. The next morning, when the complainant returned to the nursing home, he found that his wife's body was being moved without any proper explanation.
The complainant has also alleged that no proper medical updates or documents were provided to him. Based on his complaint, the district surveillance team launched an investigation into the incident and uncovered multiple violations, including a lack of documentation, discrepancies in Swasthya Sathi health care entries, along with procedural lapses during the delivery.
Commenting on the matter, the Additional District Magistrate, Sheikh Ansar Ahmed, told the Daily, "We are not going to tolerate any negligence in health services. The nursing home was found to be in serious violation of healthcare norms. A Rs 5 lakh penalty has been imposed and we have recommended cancellation or suspension of its clinical establishment license." As per the Daily, the facility has also been permanently delisted from the State's Swasthya Sathi scheme.
Meanwhile, the nursing home has denied all these allegations, and the administration has claimed that accountability and patient safety remain its top priorities.
Another nursing home in Chancal II, Maa Sayera Nursing Home, was sealed on Tuesday for allegedly operating despite closure notices received from ADM (Health) and CMOH. Key violations against the nursing home included expired CE license, absence of RMO and GNM and no WBPCB clearance. This action was also triggered due to the death of a pregnant woman.
