5 Pharmacists, 2 Delhi Health Officials Suspended Over Medicine Procurement Irregularities
New Delhi: The Delhi government has suspended five pharmacists and two officials with immediate effect after an investigation uncovered serious irregularities in the functioning of stores operated by the Central Procurement Agency (CPA), the nodal body responsible for procuring, storing and supplying medicines, vaccines and medical equipment to government healthcare facilities in the national capital.
The action follows an inquiry into the functioning of various CPA stores, which revealed significant lapses in the procurement, storage and management of medicines. The investigation was initiated as part of the government's efforts to improve transparency, accountability and efficiency in the public healthcare system.
According to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the government follows a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and administrative negligence, and any officer or employee found responsible for irregularities or misconduct will face strict disciplinary action. She said ensuring accountability in matters concerning public interest remains one of the government's highest priorities and reiterated that corruption, negligence and irregularities at any level of the administration would not be tolerated.
The suspensions come shortly after the Delhi government transferred more than 40 medical, paramedical and administrative personnel working under the Central Procurement Agency, which functions under the Department of Health and Family Welfare. The reshuffle included 10 doctors, among them Head of Office (HOO) Dr. Vinod Kumar Ranga, along with 19 employees, including pharmacists, junior medical laboratory technicians, laboratory attendants and drivers, as part of measures aimed at strengthening the agency's functioning and improving healthcare delivery.
Chief Minister Gupta stated that the government is committed to providing better healthcare services to Delhi residents and that negligence or indiscipline in the health sector would not be accepted. She added that efforts are underway to make the capital's healthcare services more robust, transparent and accountable.
The inquiry into the procurement agency also assumes significance against the backdrop of an ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the procurement of medicines, surgical consumables, medical equipment and other healthcare supplies. According to official information, the probe has identified serious administrative lapses in procurement, storage and inventory management, prompting disciplinary action against the suspended officials while further investigations continue.
According to a recent media report published by The New Indian Express, the disciplinary action is part of the Delhi government's broader effort to improve governance within the healthcare system by strengthening accountability in the functioning of the Central Procurement Agency. The report states that the government has coupled the suspensions with transfers of key personnel and has reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency, efficiency and better management of medicines and other essential healthcare supplies for public hospitals and healthcare facilities across Delhi.
