After Fungus Tablet Complaint, Insect Found in Mouthwash at Bhopal Hospital Pharmacy

Bhopal: In a serious lapse raising questions over medicine safety at a government hospital, a patient at JP Hospital in Bhopal was allegedly supplied a sealed bottle of mouthwash containing a dead insect and visible dirt, even as the patient was undergoing treatment for throat pain.
The incident has sparked concern over drug storage and dispensing practices at the hospital, especially as it comes days after another complaint involving fungus-infected tablets issued by the same pharmacy.
According to the details, the patient collected the prescribed mouthwash from the JP Hospital pharmacy and later discovered that despite the bottle being properly sealed, the liquid inside contained a dead insect along with apparent impurities. The episode has added to the growing controversy surrounding the hospital’s pharmacy services. Recently, another patient had complained of being given tablets that allegedly had fungal growth, even though the medicines were reportedly within their expiry period. Together, the two incidents have intensified scrutiny over medicine procurement, storage conditions and quality checks at the state-run healthcare facility.
Following the mouthwash complaint, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Manish Sharma stated that the matter has been taken seriously by hospital authorities. He confirmed that an investigation committee has been formed to probe the incident in detail and to ascertain how a contaminated product was dispensed to a patient.
The committee will examine storage conditions, stock handling procedures and internal quality monitoring systems at the hospital pharmacy. The CMO also assured that strict action will be initiated against those found responsible if negligence or violation of standard protocols is established, adding that patient safety remains a top priority.
The repeated complaints have once again brought attention to the need for stronger oversight, improved hygiene standards and stricter quality control mechanisms in government hospital pharmacies to prevent risks to patient health.
According to a recent media report in the India Today, the investigation committee will submit its findings after reviewing all relevant aspects related to the procurement and storage of medicines at JP Hospital.
