Blast at pharma company leaves one dead, six injured

Nagpur: Tragedy struck a pharma company's unit in Nagpur district on Tuesday when a blast occurred in a glass line reactor, killing one person and injuring six others, police said.
The explosion happened at around 11 a.m. at the unit of Ankit Pulps and Boards Pvt Ltd, located in Bhilgaon, a senior police official told PTI. The cause of the blast was not known.
All the injured are undergoing treatment at a hospital in nearby Kamptee town and one of them is in critical condition, he informed.
The company is engaged in the manufacturing of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) which is used in pharmaceutical and food industries. MCC is primarily used as an excipient1 (binder/filler) in the pharmaceutical industry.
According to its website, the firm delves into the manufacture of excipients for use in diverse pharmaceutical segments.
In recent months, there have been other reported incidents in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.
In May, a fire incident occurred at a GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Limited (GSK) contract manufacturing facility, leading to a temporary production disruption of operations at that site.
Earlier, at the end of April, a fire broke out at the Penicillin G manufacturing facility of Lyfius Pharma Private Limited, a subsidiary of Aurobindo Pharma, located in the Kakinada SEZ, Andhra Pradesh, reportedly caused by the self-ignition of coal.
