Chandigarh Chemist Alleges Abduction, Planted Evidence in Drugs Case: HC Seeks DGP Report

Chandigarh: In a dramatic twist to a four-year-old synthetic drugs case, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has demanded answers from the Chandigarh Police Chief after a city-based chemist alleged that he was falsely implicated through abduction, planted evidence, and fabricated records.
The case dates back to March 2020, when chemist Karan Sharda and his associate, Durgesh Mishra, were arrested near Sai Baba Mandir in Sector 29. Police claimed to have recovered synthetic drugs from their vehicle. However, Sharda has countered this version, alleging that he was forcibly picked up from the Zirakpur-Ambala highway by unidentified men in civilian clothes and later compelled to call Mishra to the spot. He further pointed to glaring discrepancies between the FIR and forensic findings, as well as contradictions exposed by mobile tower and call detail records.
The controversy has continued to grow. Despite the High Court directing the Chandigarh DGP in September 2020 to file a fact-finding affidavit, no such document has been placed on record so far. In the meantime, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted, Sharda spent three months behind bars before securing bail, and eventually, in 2022, police filed a cancellation report of the FIR. Unconvinced, Sharda approached the High Court once again, this time demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into what he claims is a police cover-up.
Taking serious note of the allegations, the High Court has now instructed the DGP to furnish a comprehensive affidavit compiling all reports, documents, call records, and CCTV footage to establish the truth. The matter will be heard again on November 20, 2025.
According to a Hindustan Times report, the case has raised sharp questions over due process, police accountability, and the reliability of evidence in high-profile narcotics investigations.
