Chemistry Graduate, Pharma Staffer Nabbed for MD Synthesis in Bathroom Lab

Ahmedabad: A pharmaceutical company employee was arrested in Bharuch district for allegedly operating an illegal MD drug manufacturing laboratory inside the bathroom of his rented apartment in Ankleshwar GIDC.
The Bharuch Special Operations Group (SOG) conducted a late-night raid on Friday following a tip-off about suspicious activities at the residence. The accused, identified as Anil Rahuliya, has been working as a production manager at a pharmaceutical company for the past seven years.
During the raid, police discovered what they described as a “live laboratory” set up in the bathroom of the flat. Authorities seized 74.88 grams of MD (methylene-dioxymethamphetamine), estimated to be worth approximately ₹2.24 lakh, along with various raw materials and laboratory equipment allegedly used to synthesize the drug.
According to SOG Police Inspector A. V. Panamiya, Rahuliya had been attempting to manufacture the narcotic substance for nearly seven months. Investigators revealed that he relied on online resources to learn the production process. While his first two attempts reportedly failed, he succeeded on the third try, producing nearly 80 grams of MD. Police believe he was in the process of searching for potential buyers when the authorities intervened.
Rahuliya, who holds a BSc degree in Chemistry, allegedly used his academic background and professional experience to procure chemicals and pharmaceutical apparatus from the Bharuch GIDC area. Officials stated that the materials he sourced were not banned items, enabling him to acquire them without attracting suspicion.
The accused was residing in the rented flat with his family, including a toddler, who were reportedly unaware of his alleged illegal activities. Following his arrest, he was taken into custody by Ankleshwar police, produced before a magistrate, and subsequently remanded to police custody for further investigation.
According to a media report by The Indian Express, police are continuing their investigation to determine whether the accused had any accomplices or prior involvement in narcotics distribution.
