Drug Inspector Suspended for Unauthorised Comments on Codeine Raid

suspended
Amethi: In a stringent disciplinary action, the Uttar Pradesh government has suspended Drug Inspector Kamlesh Mishra for making unauthorised statements to the media regarding an ongoing codeine cough syrup seizure case in Amethi.
The move comes after officials determined that Mishra’s comments about the enforcement actions taken were made without approval and contravened official protocols and directives.
According to reports, the controversy stems from a recent raid at a wholesale medical store in Tiloi, where codeine-containing cough syrup—a controlled substance—was seized. Subsequent inspections were also conducted at another medical shop linked to the same case. While both outlets were under review for potential licence suspension, Mishra spoke to journalists about these enforcement activities, disclosing details that senior officials stated he was not authorised to share publicly.
Government directives clearly state that only designated officers are permitted to communicate with the press on sensitive enforcement matters, particularly those involving banned or controlled substances. Mishra’s media interaction came despite these instructions, prompting the state administration to step in and suspend him with immediate effect for gross negligence and breach of conduct.
The suspension order also noted Mishra’s past controversies. Earlier, he had been involved in a widely circulated altercation with local police during a vehicle stop in Munshiganj, which reportedly involved alcohol found in his vehicle and drew criticism from within the department. These incidents contributed to concerns about his conduct and adherence to professional standards.
District Magistrate Sanjay Chauhan confirmed that the suspension order has been issued by the state government. He also stated that interim arrangements have been made to ensure that drug inspection duties in the district continue smoothly while the administration works on a replacement. Further inquiry into the case—including all documentation and circumstances surrounding the unauthorised statement—is being conducted by the Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety and Drug Administration in Lucknow, who has been appointed to lead the investigation, reports Dainik Bhaskar.
